The Building Blocks of Social Media: Nodes and Ties
A major distinction among social media platforms as channels for spreading marketing information—either by companies, by customers, or both—is the “social” nature of these platforms. We talk about “social” things all the time. We “socialize” with others online and in real life; we even “socialize” with brands and marketers from time to time (and marketers really want to “socialize” with you!). But what do we actually mean when we use this word? Simply put, the idea behind social media from a communications perspective is that people are connected to other people (or to marketers, companies, brands, and so on) in networks, which is why we often talk about social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter as social networks (and why the infamous movie about Facebook’s inception is called The Social Network). Understanding a few things about networks before thinking more specifically about how to market through them is important.
